Veneers are tooth-colored, thin, custom-made shells that cover the front surface of your tooth in order to improve its esthetic appearance. They can be used in order to improve the color of teeth that have been worn down or stained, as well as improve a tooth’s shape or size.
What types of dental veneers are available?
There are two types of commonly used dental veneers. Porcelain veneers, which are more durable, resists better to stains compared with resin veneers, which have a shorter life span and are less expensive. Porcelain veneers are the more natural looking of the two and are made in a laboratory while resin veneers are directly applied to the teeth.
When should you consider dental veneers?
If your teeth are stained or discolored
If your teeth are crooked or misshapen
If your teeth have spaces in between them
If your teeth are broken or chipped
How it’s done
You’ll need to schedule two different appointments with your cosmetic dentist in Oakland CA. At the first appointment, the doctor will trim a portion of your tooth so the veneer can be bonded on top. Then, an impression will be taken of your teeth or tooth to be sent to a laboratory to prepare the veneer. Depending on how much of your tooth structure was removed, you may receive a temporary veneer to protect the exposed tooth.
At your final visit, the temporary veneer, if you received one, will be removed. Then, the new veneer received from the laboratory will be checked to see if it fits well. It's best not to adjust porcelain veneers after they are bonded to your teeth, so any adjustments will be made beforehand. Once you and your 94612 dentist are satisfied with the look and feel of the veneer, it will be bonded to your tooth.
