Extractions are the removal of a tooth or multiple teeth from your mouth. The most common reason for a tooth extraction is when a damaged tooth is beyond practical repair. Some other common reasons for tooth extractions include:
- Advanced gum disease so that the disease doesn’t affect the supporting tissues and bone structures of the mouth
- If a tooth is blocking other teeth from coming in
- During orthodontic work to create room for the teeth that will be shifting and moving into place
- Overcrowded or impacted wisdom teeth either before or after they come in
What to expect
Your Oakland dentist will administer an anesthetic to numb the area and reduce any pain or discomfort. During the procedure, you may feel some slight pressure as the tooth is being removed, but you should not feel any pain. The extraction is usually complete in a matter of minutes. Immediately following the tooth’s removal, a small amount of bleeding is to be expected. Your Oakland dentist will apply a patch of gauze and instruct you to change the gauze along with other post-procedure steps.
