Dentist Oakland Porcelain Crowns

Improve Your Smile with Our General, Cosmetic and Specialist Oakland Dentist

While fillings only cover a small portion of a tooth, a porcelain crown or cap covers the entire visible portion of a tooth and acts as the tooth’s new outer surface. Dental crowns are used when a tooth is broken or decayed to such an extent that fillings would be unable to repair it. As a protective shell, the crown protects the damaged or decayed tooth by strengthening it and improving its appearance. While some patients request crowns to help restore a tooth’s esthetic, they are most commonly used for broken teeth. Crowns are made from various materials, but the most common include some mixture of porcelain in order to give them a similar look and feel to a natural tooth.
How it’s done
This procedure is typically completed during two separate visits to our general cosmetic & specialist dentist in Oakland, CA. At the first visit, we will reshape the tooth and take impressions to create the final crown. Typically, a portion of your tooth will have to be removed for the crown to fit properly. Once the tooth has been reshaped, we will use a special material to create an impression. This impression will be sent to a dental laboratory and be made into your unique permanent crown. Finally, you’ll receive a temporary crown to cover and protect your tooth in between visits.
At the final appointment, your Oakland dentist will remove the temporary crown and replace it with the new permanent one from the lab. Before cementing the permanent crown, we will ensure that it fits comfortably and matches the color of your teeth.
