Oakland Dentists on Prevention + Symptoms
During your regularly scheduled dental cleanings, your Oakland dentist will also be looking for signs and symptoms of oral cancer. We will feel for lumps, bumps, and tissue changes in your neck, cheeks, and mouth. We will also look under your tongue for any discolored tissue. In between dental appointments, it is important to know the warning signs and symptoms of Oral Cancer.
Oral Cancer Symptoms:
-Red, white or discolored lesions, lumps, or patches; these discolored lesions or patches will be painless, at first.
-Any sore or lump that is present for two or more weeks.
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers, with 35,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. Oral cancer develops on the tongue, the floor of the mouth, and on the lips and gums.
Oral Cancer Prevention:
While oral cancer cannot fully be prevented due to genetic factors, alcohol and tobacco use can make a patient 15 times more susceptible to oral cancer. Avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and consuming additional fruits and vegetables can help to prevent oral cancer. Regular checks and screenings can also go a long way to prevent and detect early oral cancer signs.
What if Oral Cancer is found?
If any unusual lesions or coloration are present, your Oakland dentist will perform a biopsy to confirm oral cancer. We will then provide a treatment plan, which may include help from other specialists and doctors, and could include radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery to remove the tumors.
