Protect All of Your Teeth with Our Oakland Cosmetic Dentist and Dental Inlays/Onlays
A more conservative restorative procedure compared to full crowns, dental inlays and onlays are used to repair rear teeth that have mild to moderate tooth decay and cracked teeth. Either porcelain, composite resin or gold are used to create inlays and onlays.
What’s the difference between inlays and onlays?
While inlays refer to procedures where bonded material is limited to the center of the tooth, onlays refer to procedures where the bonded material can extend further to one or more cusps of the tooth.
What are the benefits of inlays and onlays?
-They provide a natural look since they feature a natural tooth color compared to metal fillings.
-Inlays and onlays provide a great fit, and they will not expand or contract based on temperature like metal fillings.
-They can last up to thirty years
-There is minimal tooth structure removal required, which helps to preserve the maximum amount of healthy tooth structure while restoring decayed or damaged areas.
How it’s done
Patients should expect to make two different appointments with us for the placements of inlays and onlays. During the first visit, your general cosmetic & specialist dentist in Oakland, CA will take an impression of your tooth, which will be sent to a dental lab for the creation of your permanent inlay or onlay. Before leaving, we will fit your tooth with a temporary inlay or onlay for added protection in between visits. At your second appointment, we will remove the temporary material and fit your tooth with the permanent inlay or onlay received from the dental lab. And that’s it!
