Every six months, our patients of all ages are instructed to schedule a routine dental cleaning. Dental cleanings are extremely important to maintaining good oral health and hygiene. This professional cleaning will be conducted by one of our well-trained hygienist. During your appointment, we will carefully brush and floss your teeth in order to remove any mineralized plaque that may have developed in between appointments. Although brushing and flossing at home are very important to your oral health, they are not able to provide a deep and thorough cleaning like the one you will receive in our office.
How it’s done
A professional dental cleaning should last between 30 to 60 minutes. During this time, one of our hygienists will begin to remove the plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces by scaling the teeth. Depending on the hygienist’s preference, this can be performed by hand or with an electric scaler. The hygienist will also clean the pockets of the gums in order to remove any plaque buildup there.
Once the plaque and tartar buildup have been removed, the teeth are buffed and polished with a dental polisher. Polishers generally feature several different sized heads to clean hard to reach places.
