Dentist Oakland How Does My Smile Dim?

How can Your Dentist in Oakland CA Improve the Shade of Your Smile and Boost Your Confidence, Too?

We want each and every one of our patients to have a smile that they’re comfortable with and happy to share with their family and friends. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case, especially if you’re unhappy with the shade of your teeth. There are countless scenarios that your smile could become dimmer and darker, which is why your dentist in Oakland CA is here to discuss tooth discoloration and what some solutions available to you are!

Did you know that there are three main types of tooth discoloration?

· Extrinsic: This is when the surface of your teeth is stained. This is your enamel, the protective outer layer of your tooth that covers the dentin and nerves on the inside. Beverages like wine, coffee, sodas, fruit drinks, and others can easily stain this area. Smoking cigarettes and other tobacco use can also negatively affect the color of your enamel.

· Intrinsic: This is when the inner structure of your tooth, previously mentioned as the dentin, becomes darkened and can have a yellow tint. There are different reasons than the extrinsic ones that this can occur – you were exposed to too much fluoride in your childhood; you had trauma that affected your tooth when you were young that damaged the development of your permanent tooth; you suffered from internal bleeding in the tooth; and more.

· Age-Related: This is combined with both of the types above. Dentin naturally darkens and yellows as you get older and your enamel gets thinner with age, as well. As this thins out, the dentin becomes to show through. Foods and drinks will seem like they’re staining much easier since your teeth are aging and enamel thinning.

Prevention is simple! Try to brush your teeth after your three main meals of the day so you’re removing any lingering food particles and bacteria that would instead stick to your teeth and further the staining process, as well as potentially causing cavities and other dental issues.

Incorporate drinking water more frequently throughout your day, especially after eating your meal, drinking alcohol, or enjoying any other foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. This will also help loosen any food particles that may be stuck in between your teeth that could have been hiding away for good by the time you brush your teeth.

Try to limit the amount of snacking you do, as well. When people think of snacks, they think of the harmful ones like candies and chips, which cause more harm to your smile than good.
