Oakland Dentist on the Power of Genes
Don’t feel bad if you have cavities or poor dental health, surprisingly, it may not completely be your fault. According to studies and observations, dental health and cavity occurrences are in your genes. There are some people who don’t brush enough, eat a ton of sugar, and do other bad things for their teeth, and yet they don’t get cavities very often. There are also people that take extremely good care of their teeth, and yet, they are more likely to get cavities; this is because of genetics!
It is found that people that prefer sweets are more likely to develop cavities. Sweet preferences, however, are genetic. It is also known that the strength and hardness of tooth enamel has a large impact on the health of teeth. Those with soft tooth enamel are more likely to have bacteria excavate their teeth and, as a result, they are more likely to experience cavities.
About 60% of the risk for tooth decay appears to be due to genetic factors, says Mary L. Marazita, director of the Center for Craniofacial and Dental Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.
